The 2012 Canoe Polo World Championships have come to a close with the New Zealand Teams doing us proud. Three of our four teams made semi finals in their respective categories with the U21 women’s bronze medal being the highlight.
The U21 ladies played France in a closely fought semi-final early yesterday for a 1 : 2 result in favour of the French. The Kiwi girls did a great job of turning around the disappointment of a loss in the semi to dominate all over the pitch against Great Britain for a 3 : 6 win to secure the bronze medal. Germany went on to claim the U21 title.
The NZ U21 men demonstrated fantastic form in another NZL v. FRA semi-final. The Kiwi’s showed enormous heart in this game against an in form and experienced French side but gave up the win (2 : 1) with the French awarded a goal penalty in the last 15 seconds of the game. The bronze medal match against Germany later in the day also went to the wire with a one all scoreline at full time. The Kiwi U21s again demonstrated exciting and skillful polo to match the game hardened Germans but conceded the win in sudden death.
Today the senior women faced the 2010 World Champions Great Britain in the semi-final. The NZ ladies played a fantastic team game against the reigning world champs but conceded the game 4 : 3. Australia also lost their semi-final to Germany ensuring trans tasman rivalary for the bronze medal match. NZL went down to AUS 2 : 0 in another closely fought contest.
Overall this has been a highly successful championships for the New Zealand squad with our teams demonstrating in tough competition they are right up there with the best in Europe. Huge congratulations to the New Zealand U21 Women’s Team – 2012 World Championships bronze medalists!!
